Influenza and chicken pox are contagious diseases that is spread through contact with other people who have the virus. The viruses spread in droplets caused by coughing or sneezing. Basically the virus needs to pass through the air and enter the body through the nose or mouth. It can also be passed through the skin by surfaces that have been exposed to the flue virus. This virus causes several symptoms including fever, body aches, sore through, and coughing. Treatment of the flue virus is very basic; it can be treated with a few days of rest and with common over the counter drugs. Chickenpox usually passes in a week and has the same symptoms, but gives rash spots all over the body. Another disease caused by a virus is the AIDS virus. This disease causes the immune system to shut down and is not curable. Someone suffering from this disease needs constant medical care and an extensive drug therapy program to remain alive. The AIDS virus can be caused through sexual contact, though not really considered an STD. Those types of disease are passed through sexual contact or bodily fluid only and there are very many kinds (herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc). They are treatable and not immediately curable.
Diabetes is caused when the pancreas fails; therefore, the body either cannot produce enough insulin to stay regulated (type 1) or cannot produce insulin at all (type 2). Those with type 2 must receive insulin shots or pills to keep their blood sugar levels normal, and must have a strict diet to control sugar. An asthma allergy is an allergy where the sufferer experiences asthma-like symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest pain when exposed to an allergen. An asthma allergy can be treated easily by using an inhaler, or by simply taking over the counter allergy medications.
Cancer occurs when a complex mix of cells form tumors in a particular part of the body and disrupt its function. It is treated either by radiation or chemotherapy treatment, and is best cured when detected early. Breast cancer has sparked a lot of support because it strikes so many women each year, and fundraising efforts are almost as popular as those for AIDS.
There are some diseases that are triggered by insects or parasites. Malaria causes high fevers, shaking chills, and anemia. The ebola virus is named after the Ebola River in the Congo. It destroys blood vessel walls and does not allow the blood to coagulate. Polio is a disease that has been widely prevented due to a vaccine, but in the early 20th century it affected many children’s ability to walk, as it affects the central nervous system and can cause paralysis. Cirrhosis is a liver disease that is preventable, since it is usually caused by alcoholism. If left untreated, cirrhosis can lead to liver failure.
These types of diseases should be avoided. However, seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an infection or are showing symptoms.
